Awaodori is a traditional Japanese form of dance originated in Tokushima (Shikoku). There are many Awaodori dance festivals in the summer time. This dance/celebration goes back in Japanese history for 400 years. And you can experience Awaodori right in Los Angeles!

I went to lunch at Ichiriki the other day by myself. And I met a friendly lady (Machiko-san) at the sushi bar. Peter (the owner) is a really good friend with her, and he ended up introducing her to me :) I soon discovered that Peter also performs Awaodori with Machiko-san and other members of the American Awaodori Dance Association at various festivals and different stage shows around town whenever he has the opportunity! That is pretty neat.

Here is the lists of their upcoming shows:

Sep 24th (Sun) Torrance, CA (MAP)
@ Armstrong Theater
--
Oct 15th (Sun) Down Town Los Angeles, CA (MAP)
@ Aratani/Japan America Theatre
--
Nov 19th (Sun) Los Angeles, CA (MAP)
@ Japan Expo

They currently get together every Saturday & Sunday in Gardena, and every 2nd & 4th Friday in Little Tokyo (details above) for practice, and they are open to the public. Machiko-san said everyone is very friendly and they want to teach and share Japanese culture with anyone who's interested. So, you should check them out and experience a part of Japanese culture some evening if you are interested or curious about Awaodori by reading my post!

Great Awaodori photo's! That has got to be my favorite traditional Japanese dance. Hands down.

Cool that you could meet some dancers!
