I was surprised to find a good sushi place right in downtown Hermosa Beach near the Comedy & Magic Club. We went there the other weekend with our friends by their recommendation. It is right in the heart of beach town, so they get an interesting cross-section of different customers from travelers to locals. So... they seem to serve a wide variety of dishes and not just sushi. But, we went for the straight traditional sushi and sat at the counter :)
They serve a wide variety of different fish (you can get some sushi you won't find at regular "American" sushi places), and they were all really fresh! We pretty much went for the recommendation and ordered Kanpachi (came with Shiso leaf), Yellowtail, Chu-Toro, Ama Ebi, Aji, Kohada, Ika (Squid) with Shiso leaf, and Saba. The chef also gave us little bonus dishes - Kinpira Gobo & Grilled Salmon (it may have been because our friends know the sushi chef pretty well).
We were getting one order each in the beginning, but we ordered one order for both of us and started sharing since we wanted to try a greater variety (highly recommended to do that since one order of sushi always comes with 2 pieces of sushi :P) They were all excellent, and we were pretty full. My only minor complaint... their Chu-Toro was kind of disappointing since it tasted like regular Akami. It was fresh, but it wasn't melt-in-my-mouth quality for me. But, it seemed like I was the only one who noticed it though...oh well!!
The restaurant has a cool Southern California Beach town vibe to the place and is somewhat more Americanized because of the location. So, if you are looking for more of a true strict traditional Japanese sushi experience, this place is probably not for you. However, Sushi Sei will probably satisfy people that are new to sushi and for someone that already knows quite a bit about sushi. It’s a good place to take out-of-town guests because of the close proximity to the Hermosa Pier.

Sally, were the chefs friendly and good-humored? Did they take your special requests?

Hello Karen (Kodapup)!
Yes, we are looking forward for our next sushi night out :D
The sushi chefs at Sushi Sei were very friendly and good-humored for sure :) Also, they were very flexible, and I was able to ask what I didn't want on my sushi. (They like pouring Ponzu on every sushi they serve... so, I asked not to do that :P)
For my special crazy "Ume Shiso Halibut Handroll", this place seemed like they could do it!! But, I didn't try it here... :( We were too full :P
Compare to Ichiriki and Sen Nari Sushi, this place seemed little pricier for what we get. But the whole sushi experience was really good.

Hello Ikuko :)
We'll take you to one of the sushi restaurants in LA when you come visit us. We are kind of interested in trying the sushi place you mentioned when we are in JP - the new Kaiten Sushi place! It sounded interesting and somewhat wacky...
