Since Karen was back in town from Portland, all of us Sushi Lovers decided to go to a sushi bar. This time, we chose to try The Hump.
The Hump is located right on the Santa Monica airport. You can observe airplanes taking off and landing from their outside windows. Yep, really cool location and very romantic setting if the budget is out of your concern.

We ordered lots of sushi and few recommended special plates here. My favorite was Black Cod Saikyo Yaki (pic top right). It was very tasty and juicy. The wild caught Kanpachi Sashimi was kind of disappointing though... the reason being it only came with 6 slices of sashimi (VERY THIN) on a plate... and later discovered it was $50 a plate :O (pic below Black Cod) That plate just does not look like $50 and didn't taste like one either!!
Anyway, when they served our plate, we were very amazed with their presentation of the sushi. It looked better than the picture... it was truly overwhelming. Just imagine the long giant plate sitting across your table!
Well, my review on their sushi...
None of them tasted outrageously spatular or outstanding. They were all good without any surprises. I don't think any of us really went "Wow!" "Yummmm!!! "This is amazing!!" or anything like that. And some of their sushi tasted like boring regular sushi (not premium sushi like we get at Hiko). If you are at a place like this, you would expect to have overwhelming experience, won't you?
Then, I started thinking.... the whole setup of this restaurant kind of reminds me of the Chart house, and their food quality is similar to that as well. They are not the best or extremely creative in any way but not the least either... just decent (high-end standard). I would imagine this place would be an ideal place for pilots (and their family and friends) to park their private airplane and enjoy convenient nice sushi dinner. But, perhaps not someone like me...
We also got Mochi Ice cream for desert. It was not homemade or anything different by any means... Sorry to be so downer on this review... Let's just say my review would have been much different if their price wasn't as steep.
But, I still had a good time hanging out with everyone and the location is very cool! I like the airport... :)
