Wonderful tasty small Japanese restaurant, I-naba in Torrance :)
Paul and I ended up having lunch there over the past few weeks during his jury duty. We kept going back again and again afterwards... Soooo good here.... Yummmmm....

We've known the name of this restaurant because of the free local Japanese magazine called Lighthouse. Frankly, I was never curious about even trying this place because of where it's located. It's right on the busy Hawthorne Blvd in a narrow parking lot with many old small businesses looking like they're just about to go out of business. The whole shopping strip mall looks very run down and depressed. Even the store front of I-naba blends into the location. But, since it was at a convenient location from the courthouse, we decided to try, and we ended up falling in love :)

The inside of the restaurant is quite nice with a wooden floor. Since the window glass is fogged, it feels very private. The restaurant is divided into 2 sections. There is a small sushi bar that seats about 8 people and there is a dining area in a separate room. The restaurant was already packed with people, so we were seated at the sushi bar (Their sushi bar is not limited for people who only want to order sushi). And we love their sushi bar!!

For my first visit, I just wanted a simple hot Udon soup. So, that was what I had. But, Paul ended up ordering their Nigiri Sushi Lunch Special because we were sitting at the Sushi bar. Their Udon was good, but... OMG!! I sure wished I ordered what he got!! All the pictures are from our second visit to I-naba when we both ordered the Nigiri Sushi Lunch Special (I believe it's like $14.99 for 8 pieces of Nigiri Sushi, Cut Roll, Soup and Salad). :)

Unlike any other sushi restaurants, this place serves their Lunch Special Sushi exactly the way you would order sushi at the counter! When we finish our each pair of sushi items on the wooden board, the chef would prepare and give us new pieces... Yumm!

He told us that they just got Tai from Japan, and I saw him cutting up and preparing the whole fish in front of us. And, it was definitely eye-popping, mouth melting wonderful sushi! And the rice is at the perfect firmness, exactly like the sushi you get in Japan. You can bite into the fish and rice, and the piece won't just completely fall apart.

We became friends with the sushi chef after going there for 4 times in 2 weeks :)
I forgot to get his name, but I believe his name is Yoshi. He said that he works there everyday and night except on Saturday night. They even serve their lunch menu on Saturday! And he was telling us that you could order any sushi or rolls at the counter, but they have a very good set menu for sushi during the evening hours as well.

I-naba is also famous for their handmade soba. They make their soba every morning.
So... For our 4th visit, we both decided to order their Cold Soba. Paul ordered Cold Soba with Nigiri Sushi set (around $15)... and I ended up ordering Tempura Soba with Tekka-Don with Yuzu Kosho (around $18). I forgot my camera that day... but their soba was excellent (perfect firmness and texture)!!! Paul doesn't always like Tempura, but he enjoyed all of the Tempura I shared with him from my order :-) My Tekka-Don came with thick slices of fresh Tuna and everything was marvelous as always!!

There are many Japanese Salary-Man customers eating there during lunch time. I think pretty much 90% of their customers are Japanese, which is a good sign for great Japanese food. We also liked the fact that we can dine nice and quiet here to really enjoy the food. The sushi bar has a very private and cozy feel :-)
Even though Paul's jury duty is over now, we will be going back there for sure!!!

I heard that Inaba is owned by a Japanese corporation. They had another one in Santa Ana, OC but recently closed it. Now it's Sushi Murasaki. You can see the review for Murasaki in OC Register. I have not tried Inaba but sounds like it's a worthwhile place to give it a visit. I love it when these places are open for Saturday lunches!!

Hello Glenn!! How have you been? Yes, I-naba is owned by a Japanese corporation. Japonica and Ichimi-An are under the same group.

The sushi chef told us that the main parent company is a training company and does import/export business (mainly food related). And they even sell their Japanese pork sausage at Marukai and Mitsuwa :) The restaurant sells large package of those sausages for cheap... so I guess some people just stop by to buy those sometimes! (little side story...)

Anyway, yes you should go try I-naba when you have a chance :D I'm curious to hear your review from professional eye!
