Mo's Bacon Bar:
applewood smoked bacon + Alder wood smoked salt + deep milk chocolate, 41% cacao
When I first saw this chocolate bar at Whole Foods, my initial reaction was "Who would in the right mind enjoy Chocolate with Bacon?!" I was pretty disgusted by it... But, those bars kept disappearing every time I went back to shop at Whole Foods. And it was down to 1 bar... So, I decided to give it a try... thinking... you know, this might make a funny gift if I decide not to open it for myself!
I don't remember how much I paid at the Whole Foods... I thought it was more like $3,50 or $4.50 at the most, but I may just have not paid attention since there was no price tag or sign for it because apparently, they sell it for $7.50 on their official website! Wow, that's steep for a chocolate bar. If it is less than $5, it's worth trying though.
The bacon chocolate bar was surprisingly amazing.
I was going to save it for a gift, but I couldn't help myself :P Paul & I both had bites one evening... and we were both amazed how saltiness of bacon balanced out the sweetness of the milk chocolate very well. Since both of us are not crazy sweet lovers, this became a big hit! Yumm
On back of the packaging, it says-
"I began experimenting with bacon + chocolate at the tender age of 6, while eating chocolate chip pancakes drenched in Aunt Jemima® syrup, as children often do. Beside my chocolate-laden cakes laid three strips of sizzlin' bacon, just barely touching a sweet pool of maple syrup. And then, the magic—just a bite of the bacon was too salty and I yearned for the sweet kiss of chocolate and syrup, so I combined the two. In retrospect, perhaps this was a turning point; for on that plate something magical happened, the beginnings of a combination so ethereal and delicious that it would haunt my thoughts until I found the medium to express it—chocolate.
From there, it was just a matter of time…and what began as a love of salt and sweet quickly unraveled into an obsession. No sooner could I wait to unveil the royal coupling in solid bar form, a deep milk chocolate with bits and pieces of applewood smoked bacon and just a sprinkling of Alder salt. Really, what doesn't taste better with bacon?" –Katrina
This company "Vosges makes other interesting chocolate bars. Since Bacon + Chocolate bar was still sold out at Whole Foods, we ended up buying Red Fire chocolate bar and Naga candy bar to give as an additional fun gift for a birthday present.
Red Fire: Mexican ancho & chipotle chillies + Ceylon cinnamon + dark chocolate, 55% cacao
Naga: Sweet Indian curry + coconut + deep milk chocolate, 41% cacao
Again... interesting mixture :) And I don't remember paying $7.50 a bar... But maybe it was...!

Mmmmm... I have seen that Red Fire chocolate bar... and coveted it... but it was priced $10.50 at our Whole Foods! NO WAY was I going to pay $10.50 for a chocolate bar! But chocolate + chiles is amazing! I settled for a cheaper version and still really liked it. I want I want I want — RED FIRE CHOCOLATE!

I perfectly understand the chocolate + bacon combination. I think it'll be real good. I am one of those that loves the sweet + salty combination. I like french toast (no powdered sugar) with american cheese in the middle. Kind of like a french grilled cheese sandwich. Top it withg a dab of butter and a bit of maple syrup (just a little). The saltiness from the american cheese plus the melted butter and the sweetness from the maple syrup seems to balance out. My wife laughs at me when she sees me eating it but believe me, it's good. Unfortunately, you have to make this at home because no restaurant will make it for you. Furthermore, when persimmons were in season, I used to serve proscuitto, mozarella and persimmons on a stick at or sometimes persimmons wrapped in bacon. I definitely recommend you try my french toast. You'll be surprised...

Hello guys!!
I recently checked 2 different Whole Foods. I was hoping to check the pricing on Vosges chocolates :P But, they were completely gone :O
If those bars disappeared that quickly... I can't imagine selling it for $10.50 per chocolate bar... so I'm sure it's selling much cheaper here. I'll keep checking and let you know ;-)
Glenn,
I was shocked to discover the combination with bacon and chocolate! Brilliant idea :) I will try making your french toast. It sounds a bit heavy duty for me, but I would probably like it. Thinking of persimmons wrapped bacon... I started thinking... I might even like your french toast with cooked persimmons over it with sprinkle of bacon!
I read your post on Komachi... We're going to try to go there tonight!

Tell me what you thought of Komachi. Those folks are the original Inaba opening crew that left and went independent. I am thinking of going to the Great Western Steak and Hoagie on Lincoln for some pepper cheese steak real soon. When I do, you will read about it in my mixi blog. I'm sure you read my blog on Philly's Best.
